Tracy came to the Center in 2017 after being released from incarceration. After experiencing emotional trauma throughout her childhood, she began to use drugs and alcohol at an early age. While she was incarcerated, Tracy realized that her life did not have to be like this and that she could make the necessary changes.
“I am GOING to be the success story of CWIT. I’m not going back, I am determined to change my life.” Tracy said these words even before entering the Center for Women in Transition. Her drive and readiness to change were already present, but she needed help and guidance to make change happen. Tracy’s words ring true for many of the women at the Center; they just need the tools to succeed. "I knew I needed structure, I needed help, I needed a support system. It's just like a blind person trying to find a store. If they don't have any direction, they won't know where to go."
Once at the Center, a new chapter in her life began. "I've come from addiction to ambition" is how Tracy describes her life journey. She has completed our Mentor & Advocacy program and recently moved into her own apartment. She has a job with Saint Louis University, where she will start taking classes in 2019 to work towards a college degree. She facilitates classes for the Institute of Peace and Justice SOS program, which allows her to share her experiences with other women who have also been incarcerated. One day, she plans on writing a book about her life.
