Upon meeting Kat, one would never imagine the difficulties she has faced. She has a radiant energy; it’s no surprise to learn that she was a dancer for over 2 decades. Although she’s been through unimaginably painful times, she hasn’t allowed them to break her spirit.
At the age of 27, Kat found herself in a long-term abusive relationship that ended in severe physical violence. While hospitalized for three months, she was prescribed a number of pain medications, which eventually led to an addiction. Upon realizing that she was overly reliant on these substances, Kat sought out help from medical professionals. Unfortunately, she did not receive the treatment she needed, and her addiction eventually led Kat to prison and a cycle of incarceration. When Kat came to the Center in May 2017, she was challenged in ways she hadn’t imagined. She wasn’t ready to address the grief or trauma she had experienced, but the staff and women at Keyway have encouraged her to do just that. |
Kat has grown phenomenally in just months; she is especially grateful for Tracie Striebel (Baker House Employment and Life Skills Specialist) for her guidance. Kat reflects upon her time in the Mentoring & Advocacy Program as a blessing brought to her through her late mother.
Kat’s strength is the definition of inspiring. No person should ever have to endure what she did, and it’s difficult to fully grasp the trauma she has faced. But Kat was able to unlock her own strength and put herself on a better, more sustainable track with the help of those at Keyway.
Kat has successfully completed outpatient drug treatment and is now alumnae of our program. Her hope is to become a substance abuse counselor, so she may be the support that she needed in someone else’s life.
