What is trauma?
The majority of women who are incarcerated have experienced trauma in their lives, whether that be sexual violence, abuse, or other traumatic experiences. The impacts of trauma are real, resulting in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.
Without Keyway Center for Diversion and Reentry, many would lack the resources necessary to cope with trauma in healthy ways--like seeking professional care--and instead might turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with their trauma. Addressing underlying trauma may be key for a participant's recovery and transition.
Keyway seeks to provide trauma-informed care and offers behavioral health services on-site to any participant who requests it. We aim to make every aspect of our organization trauma-informed and client-centered. Keyway has trained all staff and Board members on the impacts of trauma and values the voices of current and former participants in running the program.
